LitRPG and Progression Fantasy
Dungeon Crawler Carl — Matt Dinniman
The year's defining web serial. Book six launched to record numbers. The audiobook continued its dominance. The TV adaptation entered development. But the reason this series tops the list is the writing: Dinniman maintains impossible tonal balance between absurdist comedy and genuine horror, and the character work — especially Carl and Donut's relationship — has deepened with every book.

Beware of Chicken — Casualfarmer
Volume three landed in 2024 and the Royal Road serial continues to draw readers who want warmth over grimdark. Casualfarmer writes the best slice-of-life cultivation fiction in the genre, and the series has matured into something that operates on its own terms rather than as a parody.

Pale Lights — erraticerrata
The author of A Practical Guide to Evil returned with a new serial set in a different world. The story follows a thief and a disgraced noble who find themselves in a shadowy organization beneath a dying sun. The prose is stronger than PGTE, the pacing is tighter, and the serial is firmly in its stride. Erraticerrata remains one of the best writers in web fiction.

Super Supportive — Sleyca
A superhero story about emotional labor. Alden is a support-type hero in a world where that designation carries stigma. The story examines what "support" means — logistics, care, coordination, the unglamorous work that makes hero operations possible — with prose that's unusually thoughtful for the genre. The protagonist is one of the most genuinely likeable characters in web fiction.

The Calamitous Bob — Mechanimus
A darkly funny isekai where a French combat medic wakes up in a fantasy world and deals with the situation with a combination of competence, existential resignation, and excellent swearing. The prose is tight, the action sequences are well-constructed, and the protagonist's voice carries the story through its grimmer moments.

Mark of the Fool — J.M. Clarke
A young man is marked as one of the five "Fools" of his generation and must attend a magical academy where everyone thinks he's a threat. The premise could be standard YA fantasy. The execution — thoughtful pacing, a protagonist who solves problems through preparation rather than power, and a magic system that rewards creativity — elevates it.

Strange Horticulture — multiple authors (collaborative)
An experimental collaborative fiction project on SpaceBattles where authors contribute interconnected stories set in a strange botanical universe. Part science fiction, part fantasy, entirely unpredictable. The format — multiple authors building a shared world through short stories — is something that forum fiction does uniquely well.

Digital Marine — Duck_No_Duck
In a future where soldiers can be uploaded after death, a marine discovers that her "backup consciousness" has been activated without her knowledge. Military sci-fi with a strong voice, good action, and thoughtful engagement with the philosophical implications of its premise.

Fantasy
The Wandering Inn — pirateaba
Volume 10 launched in 2024. At this point, recommending The Wandering Inn is like recommending oxygen — people who need it have already found it. But if you haven't started, the series continues to do what no other web serial does: tell an impossibly large story across an impossibly wide emotional range while maintaining character continuity across millions of words.

Katalepsis — Hungry
Lovecraftian urban fantasy set in England, following a university student who discovers that the monsters she's been seeing her entire life are real — and that she might be one of them. The prose is literary in the best sense, the horror elements are genuinely unsettling, and the found family dynamics are tender without being saccharine.

Dead Tired — RavensDagger
A lich wakes up after thousands of years and decides he's done with the whole "conquer the world" business. What follows is a comedy about burnout, the passage of time, and the difficulty of retiring when you're an immortal undead wizard with a reputation. Light, funny, and surprisingly thoughtful about endings.

Completed in 2024
The Perfect Run — Void Herald
Completed in 2024. Ryan "Quicksave" Romano's time-loop superhero adventure stuck the landing. The ending is satisfying, the character arcs resolve, and the trilogy format kept the scope manageable. Void Herald continues to be one of the most reliable authors in web fiction for completed series.

Mage Errant — John Bierce
The seventh and final book delivered a satisfying conclusion to Hugh of Emblin's journey. The series completed its arc with the care and planning that characterizes Bierce's approach to worldbuilding. One of the few progression fantasy series to finish on its own terms rather than going infinite.

Under the Radar
Godclads — OstensibleMammal
In a world where gods are dead and their corpses are technology, a scavenger survives in one of the most imaginative and aggressively original settings in web fiction. The prose is dense with invented terminology and the worldbuilding requires active engagement, but readers who put in the work are rewarded with one of the most unique fantasy worlds being published anywhere.

Virtuous Sons — Ya Boy
Xianxia cultivation meets Greco-Roman antiquity. Two young men — one a philosopher, one a warrior — pursue cultivation in a world where the Greek and Roman aesthetic is the setting rather than an analogy. The fusion of classical antiquity with cultivation tropes is executed with genuine scholarship and excellent prose. One of the most original takes on the genre.
