The fic you most want to read is never waiting politely in one place. It is in a Tumblr reblog with three additions, a Reddit comment you saved, a Discord message buried under 600 newer messages, or a screenshot that says “READ THIS” but does not include the link. This is not a sorting problem yet. It is a capture problem wearing six different app icons.
Make one door into the TBR
Choose one place where fic links go when you decide they may be worth reading. Not “things I liked on Tumblr,” not “messages I will search later,” and not open tabs, screenshots, and browser bookmarks in three different apps. One inbox. That inbox can be:
- a dedicated browser bookmark folder
- a plain note containing links
- a spreadsheet tab
- an

The exact tool matters less than the rule. When a recommendation crosses from “interesting post” to “I may read this,” save the story link to the inbox. Do not fully organize it at capture time. You are probably on your phone, supposed to be doing something else, and one accidental detour away from reading a 70,000-word fic in the grocery-store parking lot.
Save the fic, not only the rec post
A rec post contains context. The story page contains the thing you want to read. Save both when the context matters, but prioritize the direct story link. Tumblr URLs change, Discord servers disappear from your account, Reddit posts get deleted, and screenshots become unsearchable sediment. A direct AO3, FanFiction.net, Wattpad, or forum link has a better chance of remaining useful. If the recommender’s pitch is the reason you care, add a five-word note:
- Mara said chapter 4 destroyed her
- Reddit rec for competent Hermione
- Tumblr post compared it to Leverage
- fandom exchange reveal
That is enough to restore the excitement later. You do not need to preserve the entire chain of 38 increasingly frantic reblogs unless the reblogs are art in their own right.
Use an inbox shelf, not a forever shelf
The inbox should be allowed to empty. Once a week, or whenever it starts looking loud, move each link into one of four states: Read next. You would realistically start it soon. Save for a mood. Good premise, wrong moment. Put it on a specific shelf such as angst, case fic, or long weekend. Not for me. The rec was appealing, but the actual tags or summary are not. Remove it without guilt.
Started. Move it into active reading and mark where you stop. An inbox with 300 untouched links is just Tumblr drafts in a new outfit. Keep Read next small enough to scan—perhaps 10 or 20 fics—and move everything else to a mood shelf or out of the list. A cross-platform tracker makes a good landing place
Storywatch can be the common landing place when the recs point to supported fiction sites. Paste the direct story URL, let the useful details come in with it, and add the story to a shelf based on what you intend to do. The source can be Tumblr, Reddit, Discord, a group chat, or a friend standing in your kitchen. Once you have the story link, the rec no longer has to remain trapped in the source app.
This matters most for ongoing works. A Tumblr like will not tell you that chapter 19 arrived, while a tracked story can show unread chapters beside your other reads. Storywatch does not import saved posts for you; open the story, copy the link, and add it once.
Process screenshots before they become archaeology
Screenshots often lose the clickable path. Search the title and author while the message is still open, then save the direct link. If you cannot find it quickly, put the image in one album called Fic recs to find instead of letting it sink among recipes and ticket confirmations.
Remove links that no longer excite you. A TBR is not a historical record of every recommendation you received; it is a set of options for the reader you are now.
For a clean structure after capture, use the four-shelf reading-list system. If the sheer number of past recs is stopping you from beginning, start with a forward-only fic catalog.
