1. The Last Angel
Proximal Flame. SpaceBattles. Original story complete. The sequel The Hungry Stars wrapped in 2025. Red One is an AI warship, the last survivor of the war that erased her creators, hunting the Compact across millennia.
The space combat is tactical and patient, and Red One herself is the draw: genuinely alien in her thinking, sympathetic anyway. Read the complete original story first, then decide whether to follow the sequels.
2. Worm
Wildbow. WordPress. Complete at roughly 1.7 million words. Taylor Hebert controls bugs, a D-list power she turns into one of the most feared careers in Brockton Bay.
Finished since 2013 and still the medium's benchmark for escalation. The superhero dressing sits on top of real sci-fi bones: powers have a source, and the reveal recontextualizes everything. And when you finish, there's a guide to Worm fanfiction waiting, because the fandom never stopped.
3. Twig
Wildbow. WordPress. Complete. An alternate 1920s where biological science won the industrial revolution. Sylvester and the other Lambs are experimental children, brilliant, dangerous, and built with expiration dates.
The found-family dynamic between the Lambs is the best character work Wildbow has done. Darker than it sounds, and it sounds dark.
4. The Perfect Run
Void Herald. Royal Road. Complete trilogy. Ryan "Quicksave" Romano can set a save point and reload on death, which has made him immortal, unkillable, and deeply strange at parties.
A time-loop story that uses the loop for comedy as often as tragedy, set in a post-apocalyptic New Rome carved up by superpowered factions. Tight, funny, finished. The rare serial trilogy with no wasted book.
5. Ra
qntm. qntm.org. Complete. Magic is discovered in the 1970s and treated as a branch of engineering, complete with degrees, journals, and lab work. Laura Ferno thinks she can push it further than anyone alive.
The floor plan keeps changing. Every time you think you know what kind of story this is, it escalates a level. The ending proved divisive enough that qntm eventually revisited it, which tells you how invested readers got.
6. Fine Structure
qntm. qntm.org. Complete. Interlinked stories set in a universe where the laws of physics keep shutting down any technology that gets too powerful, while superhumans keep appearing anyway.
Older and rougher than Ra, with individual chapters that hit like classic short stories. Read it for the big ideas and forgive the seams between them.
7. There Is No Antimemetics Division
qntm. SCP wiki, later collected as a standalone book. Complete. Yes, a third qntm entry. He keeps finishing things, which is more than most of this medium can say.
An antimeme is an idea that eats your memory of it. Marion Wheeler runs the Foundation division that fights them, and she cannot remember what she's fighting. It needs zero SCP background, and it's the scariest thing on this list.
8. Chrysalis
BeaverFur. Reddit's r/HFY. Complete. Humanity is extinct, and the machine that survives us gets to decide what our extinction costs. A methodical, oddly meditative revenge story told entirely from the AI's perspective.
To be clear, this is BeaverFur's Chrysalis. It shares nothing but a title with RinoZ's ant story, which is also good and very much not complete.
Where the complete editions live
Older serials drift. Some live on personal sites, some on forum threads, and some have revised ebook or audio editions that differ from the free web versions.
